Blake Shelton Co-Hosts 11/9-10

The co-host this wknd is Blake Shelton, who is in the Top 5 with Post Malone’s hit “Pour Me a Drink.” Blake credits Post with getting him excited again about music. Blake just signed a new record contract and hopes to have new music very soon. He also talks about his recent appearances on ESPN’s College Game Day and the induction of Toby Keith into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Lon began the show by asking Blake if anything’s new? “There’s probably been a million things.  I retired from The Voice.  Post Malone asked me to sing a duet with him, which came out of left field.  That’s probably the reason I got back in the studio to make new music of my own.”

How did the meeting come about with Post Malone? “I hosted a tribute show to Elvis on CBS (in 2018).  Post was a new artist at the time.  I was just blown away by him.  I didn’t see him again until the Super Bowl this year, and he told me he was working on a country album.  He reached out and asked me to sing on his album, and it ended up being a big hit for both of us.”

Blake & Post debuted the song at CMA Fest in June: “We filmed the video the day before that.  We’d never been in front of a crowd performing it. It was a hell of a way to introduce a song and perform it for the first time. It was an overwhelming experience.”

Lon asked Blake what he’s been doing since leaving The Voice: “I haven’t been doing much, which was the point.  I did The Voice for 12 years, it took over my life.  The whole idea was to get some life in before it’s too late.  We have three kids, and I try to spend time with them. I’ve had a couple years since I retired from The Voice, and it still doesn’t feel that long.”

Lon asked if he’s watched the show lately: “I saw Reba on the show, because Gwen was on that season.  But I didn’t watch a lot.  If I watch at all these days, it’s when Gwen’s on the show.  I sat through 23 seasons in my red chair, so if I miss a few episodes these days, you can’t blame me.”

Blake was in town a few weeks ago to induct the late Toby Keith into the Country Music Hall of Fame: “I did two tours with Toby. Looking back, I think Toby knew I needed that.  I was in between hits.  What a shot in the arm that was for me.  I don’t know a more loyal person in the industry than Toby Keith.”

Before The Voice, Blake co-hosted the ACM Awards with Luke Bryan. In a couple weeks, Luke will co-host the CMA Awards with Peyton Manning & Lainey Wilson: “Hosting an awards show with Luke Bryan is like pushing a chain up a hill. He’s a moron, and I want him to hear this.  I don’t know Peyton, but putting Lainey in the mix is adding beauty & class.  She’ll hopefully bring Luke up a few notches.”

Blake also has great stories this week about Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, Dustin Lynch, Keith Urban, and Dan & Shay.

NEXT WEEK: Thomas Rhett
